All volunteers attending a Volunteer Orientation are required to fill out a Volunteer Application

All volunteers (18 and over) working one-on-one with clients must fill out the Special Olympics Arizona Class A Volunteer Application. Horses Help Staff will contact you once you are an active Volunteer to complete all necessary Special Olympics Paperwork.

New Volunteer Orientation- It all starts here!

    • Potential volunteers must be a minimum of 16 years of age or older and must be of physical, cognitive, and emotional ability to perform all aspects of the volunteer job duty(ies) to which they commit.
    • Volunteers at Horses Help come in all different shapes and sizes, large groups, individuals and families too! Whatever is in your heart Horses Help has a job for you. Horses Help welcomes your willingness to help in the programs allowing the community of special needs riders to achieve their dreams. Horses help will make great use of your talents while fulfilling your quest of being a part of something very special.
    • Volunteer committees and jobs are designed to give each volunteer an opportunity to make use of their personal talents and fulfill their reason for volunteering. The time commitment is up to the individuals and dependent upon where they wish to help out. Here are a few options available to volunteers:
      • Requirements: Minimum of 16 years of age. In good physical, cognitive, and emotional health and ability. Willingness to learn about Horses Help.
      • Prerequisites: Complete New Volunteer Application. RSVP for New Volunteer Orientation
      • Required Training: Completion of New Volunteer Orientation.

 Sidewalker & Coach:

  • Sidewalkers and Coaches are individuals who are trained to verbally and/or physically assist our Participants in processing instructor directions maintaining their balance, engaging with peers, etc. during our adaptive riding classes.
    • Requirements: Ability to commit to a consistent weekly schedule of 2-4 hours for 6 week duration. Ability to walk at a brisk pace for 30 minutes, ability to lift at least 50 pounds, ability to jog for 200 feet.
    • Prerequisites: Completion of New Volunteer Orientation
    • Required Training: Completion of Sidewalker & Coach Training and Practical Evaluation.

 Horse Handler:

  • Participate in turn in/turn out and help prepare horses for their classes. They also assist participants with grooming and tacking during horsemanship activities.
    • Requirements: Ability to commit to a consistent weekly schedule of 2-4 hours for 6 week duration. Ability to walk at a brisk pace for 30 minutes, lift at least 50 pounds, and jog for 200 feet. Ability to demonstrate understanding of equine body language, communication, and the 'Horses Help Way' of handling horses.  Ability to physically and cognitively process the environment and quickly react to various situations.
    • Prerequisites: Successful completion of New Volunteer Orientation, Sidewalker & Coach Training and Practical Evaluation
    • Required Training: Horse Handler Training and Practical Evaluation

 Horse Leaders (horse experience required):

  • Horse Leaders are responsible for the safety of the horse and the team as a whole; horse leaders assist in ground and mounted classes. Come before class to groom, warm-up and tack horses and then lead them for  students.
    • Requirements: Ability to commit to a consistent weekly schedule of 2-4 hours for 6 week duration. Ability to walk at a brisk pace for 30 minutes, to lift at least 50 pounds, and jog for 200 feet. Active volunteer in adaptive riding/horsemanship classes with ability to demonstrate understanding of horse groundwork skills and consistent implementation of Horses Help policies and procedures. Ability to physically and cognitively process the environment and quickly react to various situations.
    • Prerequisites: Successful completion of New Volunteer Orientation, Sidewalker & Coach Training and Practical Evaluation, Horse Handler Training and Practical Evaluation.
      • Must be an active volunteer in classes for a minimum of 1 session.
      • Volunteers invited to Horse Leader Training by staff
    • Required Training: Completion of Horse Leader Training and Practical Evaluation

Barn Buddy:

  • Barn buddies help with stall cleaning, feeding, turn out, etc. No horse experience required, however you must be able to work independently alongside our other barn buddies.
    • Requirements: (Ability to commit to a consistent weekly schedule of 2-4 hours for 6 week duration). Be able to lift at least 50 pounds and able to be outside for up to 4 hours. Ability to physically and cognitively process the environment and quickly react to various situations.
    • Prerequisites: Completion of New Volunteer Orientation
    • Required Training: Volunteers area assigned to a Barn Buddy lead for 'on the job' training

Administrative and Marketing:

  • Volunteers who are skilled at data entry, drafting correspondence and meeting notes, phoning, research, accounting, creating newsletters, maintaining website, creating story boards, taking pictures and reaching out to others may be a good fit for the Administrative and Marketing team
    • Requirements: Proficient in multiple computer programs, experience in administrative or marketing field, organized, solid communicator, team-oriented, time efficient, solid follow-through, self-motivated
    • Prerequisites: Completion of New Volunteer Orientation
    • Required Training: Volunteers will work with staff for 'on the job' training depending on the area in which they will be active.

Cardinals Crew:

  • The Cardinals Crew runs two vending locations at the University of Phoenix Stadium during all home games. Additional Cardinals Crew paperwork will be required.
    • Requirements: Minimum age of 19 years old. Completion of all required background checks and all paperwork required by the facility.
    • Prerequisites: None

Special Events/Fundraising:

  • Attend volunteer fairs at local schools and companies to promote the various volunteer opportunities available to HH community. Attend local equine events to promote Horses Help, or spend time planning a golf tournament, dinner and auction or any other of our amazing events!
    • Requirements: Ability to commit to a consistent weekly schedule of 2-4 hours for 6 week duration.   Willingness to learn about Horses Help's mission, vision, values and programs. Must be organized, great communication skills, team-oriented, time efficient and solid follow-through.
    • Prerequisites: Completion of New Volunteer Orientation

Crafty Crew:

  • Assist with creative decoration of Horses Help for upcoming special events. Make and send out birthday wishes to Participants and Volunteers. Keep signage and calendars up to date around the property.
    • Requirements: Ability to commit to a consistent weekly schedule of 2-4 hours for 6 week duration.
    • Prerequisites: Completion of orientation in the last year.

Facility Maintenance:

  • HH can always use help maintaining and improving the premises including weeding and watering, as well as projects to maintain the facility.
    • Requirements: Handy, knowledgeable, organized, great communication skills, ability to work independently alongside others, time efficient, solid follow-through. Ability to commit to a consistent weekly schedule of 2-4 hours for 6 week duration is a plus.
    • Prerequisites: Completion of orientation in the last year.

Garden Gnomes:

  • Are you a handyman or green thumb type?  We can always use help to maintain and improve the ever-growing garden. Come out and cultivate fruit and veggie producing garden and train future horticulture volunteers. There is also the possibility of assisting the participants of the Dementia Program who will be working in the garden as well.
  • Requirements: Ability to commit to a consistent weekly schedule of 2-4 hours for 6 week duration. Ability to physically and cognitively process situations that arise in the garden environment and tolerate outdoor activity.
  • Prerequisites: Completion of New Volunteer Orientation

Summer Programs:

  • Are you available to help in various summer programs that run May-June each year? Horses Help's summer programs have a different format than the typical Program Year classes and are a fun change of pace for volunteers.
    • Requirements: Ability to walk at a brisk pace for 30 minutes, ability to lift at least 50 pounds, ability to jog for 200 feet (minimum as a side-walker/coach). Leading a horse with a thorough understanding of equine body language and Horses Help Safety Protocol (as a horse lead).
    • Prerequisites: Completion of New Volunteer Orientation, Sidewalker & Coach Training and Practical Evaluation
