Finding Peace in the Presence of Horses: One Veteran's Story

AJ is a combat veteran who was wounded in Iraq. He understands sacrifice in a way most never will. He also knows the importance of staying busy and not slipping into isolation. For him, part of that is spending time with horses. He’s involved in other horse programs around the Valley, but his time at Horses Help is different. Here, he doesn’t come to train or compete. He comes to slow down. To breathe. To reconnect.
Through our partnership with PATH International and the Wounded Warrior Project, veterans like AJ have the opportunity to engage in Equine Assisted Services in a way that prioritizes healing, presence, and self-care. Whether it’s a one-on-one session or time spent in a group, the connection our veterans form with their equine partners opens up a quiet space to regulate, reflect, and simply be.
What AJ seems to value most about his time at Horses Help is the ability to just be with the horse. No expectations. No pressure. Just that grounding connection that helps him tune back in to himself and the relationship he builds with the horse.
Veterans interested in participating in programs like this can apply for a scholarship through the Wounded Warrior Project. Once approved, PATH International, of which Horses Help is a Premier Accredited Center, reviews the application. If it is a good fit, scholarship reimbursement can be applied toward 10 sessions of Equine Assisted Services.
It is a meaningful collaboration, and we are honored to serve those who have served.
