Equine Specialist
Job Description
The PATH Intl. Certified Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning serves as the equine expert within equine-assisted services (EAS), ensuring the safety and well-being of the horse while supporting ethical, effective interactions between equines and participants.
This professional is highly skilled in horsemanship and equine behavior, and collaborates closely with CTRI, mental health therapists and/or educators to facilitate sessions that meet client needs. The Equine Specialist monitors equine responses, halts any activity that may compromise the horse’s welfare, and helps maintain a safe, respectful environment for all involved.
Their role is essential in bridging the equine-human connection within therapeutic and educational settings, guided by PATH Intl. standards and values.
WHAT THE ROLE INVOLVES

Position Responsibilities
PARTICIPANT SUPPORT

Develop and implement individualized lesson plans aligned with participant goals and Horses Help documentation standards.

Facilitate safe, respectful interactions between participants and horses, adapting activities to therapeutic or educational goals.

Communicate effectively with mental health professionals, educators, and families to keep sessions aligned with participant needs.

Observe and report equine responses that may indicate changes in participant engagement or emotional state.

Maintain measurable session objectives and weekly progress notes, and summarize progress at the end of each session.
EQUINE PARTNERS

Monitor equine behavior and well-being before, during, and after sessions.

Advocate for each horse’s needs by adjusting or stopping activities that may cause stress or discomfort.
VOLUNTEER COLLABORATION

Provide volunteers with guidance and support related to safe equine handling and session protocols.

Help create a culture of respect and learning in which volunteers feel confident and supported.

Serve as a role model for ethical horsemanship and compassionate teamwork.
Education & Experience
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma.
-
Current PATH Intl. Equine Specialist certification.

Current First Aid and CPR certification.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
-
Associate’s degree in Equine Science or a related field.
-
At least two years of experience in equine management, teaching, or horse training.

Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Education, Recreation Therapy, or a related field.

Experience or training in trauma-informed care and person-centered services.

Experience working with veterans, individuals with PTSD or other behavioral-health needs, or people with disabilities.

Experience collaborating with participants’ families, caregivers, educators, therapists, and other support professionals.
WORKING CONDITIONS
-
Work takes place in an equine environment and may include exposure to changing outdoor weather conditions.

Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and complete physical tasks associated with sessions and horse care.

Some evening and weekend availability may be required.
